Let’s face it, authentic has finally become trendy. Even brands that were launched yesterday tend to create a back story about granny’s recipes, or a great-great grandfather’s penchant for perfection that has been handed down with the family business…
Thankfully, every now and then we find the real deal – such as the Fàbrica Moritz in Barcelona. This brewery was established in 1864 when the young Louis Moritz moved from the Alsace to Barcelona – setting up his brewery on the edge of the emerging Eixample district. Over 150 years later it remains in the same spot, right in the heart of Barcelona’s cosmopolitan Sant Antoni neighbourhood.
Whether you’re already a fan of Moritz’s light golden pilsner beer or have yet to enjoy your first taste of “Barcelona’s beer,” the Fàbrica Moritz is well worth visiting. It’s an insider experience that you’ll be reminded of all over the world, as Moritz is now exported internationally, and you’re sure to find yourself sharing the anecdotes with friends over a cold beer in London, Dubai or New York. We caught up with the Fàbrica Moritz crew for a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of Moritz and here’s what they had to say:-
1. Describe the Mortiz experience in 5 words
Creative, fun, innovative, stimulating and refreshing.
2. What is the most memorable event that has been held in the Fàbrica Mortiz?
Fàbrica Moritz hosts a different event almost every day, so it’s very, very, very difficult to highlight just one! We have held fashion shows, film screenings, award ceremonies, galas, book presentations, concerts, etc., The most memorable event was probably the inauguration of the factory as a gastronomic space, which took place and opened to the public in 2011. We served 25,000 portions of patatas bravas and Moritz beers, closed off the street and got the whole of Barcelona involved!
3. Is there any type of event that fits especially well with the Moritz philosophy?
We love events that have a story behind them. Having a party just for a party’s sake doesn’t resonate with us. We always want a reason, a story, or some kind of explanation.
4. Have you noticed a change in Catalonia’s beer culture in recent years?
It’s definitely increasing overall. More people are wondering how to make beer at home and want to know more about the production process of Moritz. They’re interested in seeing how we brew it in our Moritz micro-brewery.
5. Tell us about the products that are prepared in the Fábrica Moritz
All the beer consumed in the Fàbrica Moritz is made right here in our micro-brewery. It is a fresh, unpasteurized beer, straight from the tank; a real treat in the centre of Barcelona. We also bake our own bread, #Triticum, which is delicious, and offer some tasty dishes in the bar.
6. Where would you suggest going to enjoy a Moritz beer in Barcelona?
Our top recommendations are the Velodrome (Muntaner, 213), El 300 del Born (Plaça Comercial, 12), and our Fàbrica. If you’d like to enjoy some spectacular views over the city we recommend La Caseta del Migdia in Montjuïc (Mirador del Migdia).
So there you have it, when in Barcelona do as the Catalans do, visit the Fàbrica Moritz situated at: Ronda Sant Antoni 39, Barcelona. This place really tells a story!
