Everybody in the fashion industry knows that Diesel throws the most unforgettable parties in the business – with each store opening around the world at that! And Paolo Ortelli is the main man at these VIP events. His remixes and DJ sessions have rightfully helped him earn the “approved by Diesel” stamp and by all means contributed to his fame amongst the Italian jet set when not music stars in general.
Paolo Ortelli has composed amazing official remixes like Partition by Beyoncé, Tik Tik Boom by Britney Spears and has reached the nº1 top spot of the US billboard dance charts with the remix of: Slow down by Selena Gomez. The quality of his Mash ups and incredible passion for dance music; have gained him a strong connection with the dance crowd. His latest Mash up of Pharrell William’s Happy and Geko is currently played in some of the best clubs around the world.
His formidable “Spankers” project has recently signed with booking agent Mona Rennalls, so look out for plenty more dates and festivals on the calendar and some exciting new releases on the way. Without further ado, meet the Italian DJ of the moment which LookBook360 has sought out for you:
You were turned onto music from a very young age. Was there a defining moment when you decided to make this the professional focus of your life?
Yes, at the end of the 90’s. When I started to work for an Italian local radio and signed my first contract.
You’ve won chart-topping success and endless kudos through working with the likes of Cher Lloyd, Snoop Dogg and Armin van Buren. What collaborations do you personally rate as your top achievements?
Honestly all of them. I’m proud of everything I’ve been doing along with my partner in crime Luke Degree, with whom I formed the Spankers project, my manager Pierangelo Mauri and my A&R Rodney Hill. It was amazing to hit the top 10 several times on the iTunes charts, as well as selling more than 100,000 copies of the Spankers’ songs in Japan and achieving a million clicks on YouTube. Having Sex On The Beach placed in C.S.I. Miami & Jersey Shore was unbelievable, and making official remixes for Bob Sinclar, Pitbull, Selena, Britney Spears, Armin, Cher Lloyd and more are all milestones through many years of collaborations. I’m honoured and humbled to have worked with each one of them.
Who would you most like to work with in the future, for collaboration, production or remix?
There are a lot of artists that I really respect and would love to work with. I think it would be awesome to collaborate with Axwell. Who knows what the future will bring? But I’m excited about the possibility of anything occurring…
What do you make of the current electronic music scene? Is there anything you’re particularly into, or not impressed with?
Truthfully I don’t like the current scene and I think it’s like a big bubble which is about to IMPLODE. It’s time to get back to real music, real singers, real producers and musicians! There are too many fakes!
Which city do you most resonate with at the moment and why?
Tokyo and Osaka, because of the popularity of the Spankers project there.
You’ve played in some of the biggest and most prestigious clubs and festivals around the world, which ones would you especially recommend to our international globetrotting readers and why?
Very difficult question. There are a lot of beautiful places around the world and I have had the fortune to visit lots of them, too many to name. But I was especially impressed by Skybar in Beirut (Lebanon). It’s something indescribable, situated on the roof of a building, surrounded by the sea. It’s like a Roman amphitheatre delimited by 270 square meters of Led Walls. I think that all the globetrotters are supposed to visit it at least once in their lifetime.
Have you noticed the mobile phone and “selfie” culture starting to change the ambience on dance floors around the world?
Definitely. It’s like the phone has become their dance partner. Rather than actually listening to the music playing, they now do their dance with the phone making selfies of a night out somewhere…
What’s your favourite way to wind down after a big night behind the decks?
I love being with my family as music takes me away from them so often. Also I love watching Formula 1 racing and some football. With the World Cup now on that should be an exciting way to wind down, ha!
What’s new on the Spankers and Paolo Ortelli front for the summer? Any new releases, sessions or festival appearances on the horizon for us to look forward to?
Yes of course. As far as Spankers, a new album titled “Party Time” has just been released in Japan with huge results, with a number of great singles which will soon be released worldwide including features from Steve Edwards, Lil Eddie, Machel Montano and more. As Paolo Ortelli I’m about to release my new singles in collaboration with Luke Degree and Pat-Rich… real Club Bangers!
This DJ possesses all of the essential traits needed to succeed, there is therefore no doubt in our mind that his ingenious remixes and live mush ups will propel his career from strength to strength.
Unlike many others, this guy has real talent! That is, he can really mix – he’s isn’t just a studio DJ!
