DJ Leomeo is internationally renowned for his capacity to give people goose bumps on the dance floor. Since the beginning of the year 2000, his mixes have been pumping vibrations into the bloodstream of respected clubbers and socialites alike! It is by far thanks to his talent and not just his good looks, that he has become one of the most important ambassadors of the global gay community!
I’d personally like to add that his contagious energy is what makes clubbers worldwide, go-off on the dance floor. We hope that his percussion sounds and Diva voices will continue to penetrate our senses and get under our skin. That is why we interviewed DJ Leomeo for you.
Do you realise that after all these years in the gay scene that you have become an icon for the international gay community?
It took me a lot of time to come to terms with this. I must say that I also owe this incredible popularity to the renowned French photographers “Pierre et Gilles”. They have exposed worldwide as you know and this has contributed without doubt, to such notoriety today. It’s also a fact that I have been fully concentrated on my passion for music for many years now; which has also helped me make a name for myself as a DJ. I am grateful to clubbers for their confidence and feedback. I hope to continue sharing my passion with them through my DJ sets.
Your download stats are simply amazing – do they determine the choice of new projects?
No, not really. The choice of my new projects is clearly determined by clubbers and those who follow me on my different social networks. This feedback helps me stay sharp, which is really important because musical trends change extremely rapidly. That is why I’m always on the lookout for new sounds, experimenting mixes, etc.,
The day you decide to hang-up your headphones, (which we hope not for a very long-time by the way) how is it that you would like the world of “clubbing” to remember you?
I hope that day doesn’t come for a very long time! In the meantime, I will continue to mix, create and produce with all my joy; so that when the day comes – people will remember my music and continue to dance to it!
You started off in Paris, mixing tribal and percussion sounds with house music. What would you say are the sonorities that influence you the most today?
In all artistic domains in general (Music, Fashion, Design, Art, etc…) there is always a starting point which is based on what already exists. In my case, these rich sources of inspiration help me not only to add my personal touch to them; but also to build upon my existing musical identity. I would therefore say that that the sounds that most influence me today are: deep house (which was “Garage” in the 90’s) and Tech House (an evolution of House Music).
As I say in French “la musique est an éternel recommencement” which in English would be: “Music is made-up of a series of new beginnings”
How do the concepts of club music today overlap with the 80’s garage and Diva voices which I know are deer to your heart?
Nowadays, there are many remixes that exist. I think that Divas of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s will never go out fashion. The concept of club music with Diva voices is something that comes naturally to me. In fact, I think that I’ll always continue in this line, doing samplings with Diva voices and continue to work with Divas like Diva Avari and many more bring me endless joy.
Many DJ’s would love to do a cross-over record with a rock band, what about you?
Without hesitation, I would definitely choose the song “Come back to me” from the French rock band “Pony Pony Run Run”. I think that it has an amazing swing to it.
When playing in a new country, does it inspire you with special sounds?
I always listen to mixes of DJ’s that play in countries that I am about to visit. Especially resident DJ mixes of clubs where I am scheduled to mix. This helps me immerse myself into their musical style. Making it easier to take clubbers into my musical world, during my sets. Although I always try to do this gradually so that I don’t create a shock nor risk losing my musical identity!
It amazes me to see just how well-balanced you are in everything you do; especially because you’re always on tour! C’mon Leo, wipe that cute grin off your face and share with us your secret?
After years of experience in the night scene, I have realised that discipline is of paramount importance! I gladly admit that I am fortunate enough to have a life-partner that has nothing to do with the night scene. On top of this, I am very close to my family which also helps me keep my feet on the ground. This is what keeps me well-balanced at all times and away from the glittering dangers of the night. (Cheeky grin)
Someday I am sure; some producer from Hollywood will come-up with the idea of making a film about the gay scene. And I think that both you and DJ Brent Nicholls should have the leading roles don’t you?
I have another 10 years of DJ career ahead of me to look forward to so why not! After that, they’ll have to choose someone else to play my role because I’ll be too old. (LOL)
You’re a living legend making history, tell us something we don’t know?
I started off working as a transformist at “Olivia Valère”. Back then or should I say in the early ‘90’s, this was the most exclusive club in Paris. I was very young of course so it’s still a secret. (LOL) I wanted to share this with you my Will, especially after so many years of friendship 😉
I can now say at the age of 41, that I’ve done all jobs possible within a club; except for “Madame Pipi” . No offense to them!
